Bupleurum Bronze Beauty (Bupleurum longifolium)
The Brown One.
This is a legendary plant, one that never fails to prompt the question ‘Oooh, what’s that?’. It has colour that ranges from beige to copper, with an umbellifer shape. It can be hard to get hold of, and my first plants were from our local Edrom Nursery. It flowers in June, but the flower heads remain usable on the plant for a good few weeks, if you can manage not to cut them.
Bronze Bupleurum is difficult to germinate, and takes months. Fresh seed is your best chace and this seed was collected just a few weeks ago. Under NO circumstances throw the seed tray if it doesn’t appear. It can take up to 18 months (but is worth the effort!)
For best results, sow the seeds immediately into compost and cover well. Keep somewhere cool/cold over winter, but make sure mice can’t eat the seed. In February/March bring the seed tray into a warm polytunnel/greenhouse/porch and the seedlings should start to appear. Protect from slugs. Pot on in year 1, then plant out in a sheltered sunny spot.
At least it’s perennial though, so you only have to germinate the seeds once!
Height 70cm
Spread 30cm
Quantity 0.3g/approx 50 seeds
