Woad (Isatis tinctoria)

£3.50

Yellow clouds in May and early June

Woad is a traditional dye plant, used in a fermented form to create blue. I started growing it in my Heirloom Silk ribbon dying days, but the fermentation was very very stinky, Then it flowered and it’s been an essential cut flower ever since -imagine acid yellow gypsophila. It’s a true biennial, so needs to be sown in late summer to flower the following year. Very easy to grow and tough, grow it outside. The seedheads are dangly black clusters, also lovely for adding to late summer arrrangements, just don’t forget to sow some more for the following year.

Height: 1 metre

Spread: 60cm

Quantity 0.2g/approx 40 seeds
